This study aims to examine the determinants of food insecurity among middle-aged. Whereas the previous literature has accumulated on knowledge around experiences of food insecurity among old population, research on middle-aged¡¯s food insecurity has been limited. However, it is necessary to study poverty experiences among middle-aged in order to prevent poverty and produce active aging, given that economic vulnerability among middle-aged becomes severe. This study examines determinants of food insecurity, in particular, income, economic activity, or living alone among those aged 45 to 54 at baseline using Korean Welfare Panel data from 2009 to 2016. Results indicate that income is a significant factor to lessen food insecurity. This suggests that it may be useful to provide income support for those who are economically disadvantaged in order to improve food insecurity. This study contributes to the current literature in two ways. First, it examines the casual factor of food insecurity using longitudinal data. Second, it sheds lights on the determinants of food insecurity among middle-aged who have not been studied until recent time. Policy and practice relevant strategies for preventing and improving food insecurity follow.
